About the Academy

History

The Academy of Astrology was opened in Applecross in 1983 by Barbara Brackley, daughter of prominent Jungian analyst Rix Weaver. Barbara was soon joined by Gillian Helfgott, and the two ran the Academy for many years until Gillian's involvement in the career of husband-pianist David Helfgott claimed her full attention. In 1998 Jeannette Lewis-Hill began teaching at the Academy just as Barbara was approaching retirement. They agreed on the importance of continuing the Academy, and by 2002 Jeannette had fully taken on the running of the school.

About the Director

Jeannette Lewis-Hill is originally from New York, and lived in various North and South American locations before settling in Western Australia in 1975, - brought here by the mining industry. She began her astrology studies in the early 1980s, and holds a Diploma from the Astrological Guild of Educators International. Jeannette has also kept alive her career as a professional artist, and more recently as a curator. Her deepest astrological interests are in the spiritual, psychological and health areas, with the astrology of world figures and events running a close second. These interests are interwoven with the teachings.

Jeannette also consults and gives public talks aimed at raising the awareness of astrology.

The Academy

Classes are held in a spacious studio in bird-filled natural gardens, close to the historic old Riverton Bridge. Courses are offered in autumn and spring terms of 12 weeks each. The course material is concentrated, and students do further research outside class. Some basic texts are required.

The course material is streamlined into four levels:

  1. The Foundations of Astrology
  2. Cycles and Predictive Astrology
  3. Special topics
  4. Advanced techniques

A certificate of completion is issued at the end of each level. Exams are optional, and personal-interest students are welcome. Students wishing to sit for a Guild exam may do so at the end of four levels of study.

The Academy uses the Astrological Guild of Educators International for both certificate and diploma level exams.

Policy

Students work with their own birth charts and those of close family or friends throughout the courses. Self-understanding and sensitivity are encouraged, and student privacy is respected at all times. Astrology bridges the worlds of the practical and the metaphysical, and students are encouraged to learn accuracy by constantly testing new material for validity against their charts and the charts of people whom they know well.
