PISCES     The Twelfth Sign

The Fishes

One immortal, one mortal, one swimming upstream and the other down.

Ruled by Jupiter and Neptune.
Mutable water, feminine and receptive.

“I, YET NOT I”

                              “I MERGE”

The 12th house is linked with this 12th sign.

Jupiter and Neptune are accidentally dignified in the 12th .

Body part: feet.

Concept: The last sign of the zodiac, - the inner self is preparing for retreat from the world, the ego is being dissolved, thus the emotions are vulnerable to picking up all sorts of impressions because the person has weakened boundaries. The soul desires to merge with the Godhead. The person desires to merge with another. Two fish are the personality and the soul, - swimming in opposite directions, - which one wins? Trying to lose their sense of separateness. Most sensitive sign, introspective and hard to understand, need retreats. Inspired or chaotic, insightful or confused.

Qualities: sensitive, sympathetic, compassionate, escapist, vulnerable, imaginative, psychic, emotional, mystical, creative, adaptable, spiritual.

Liabilities: over-sensitive, insecure, seeks control through giving [martyrdom], paranoia, poor sense of individuality, poor sense of direction, addictive, escapist.

Need to learn: “serve or suffer.” Self-protection.

Handling the Piscean: empathise with them, “be there” for them.

In what way is Pisces capable? Pisces excels in compassionate care and is very spiritual. They are often quite psychic and have well developed ESP. Pisceans are chameleons who can emulate others and turn their hands to many things. Their creative imagination is unequalled in the zodiac.

How is Pisces Mutable?

They are chameleon-like; adaptable because they are able to mould their feelings differently for different occasions. Pisces are very influenced by the psychic qualities of their environment, and may either reflect it, or suffer for it. They tend to seek role models to reinforce their softly-formed sense of identity. Often they take on assumed identities to adapt to their culture – especially Pisces men, who frequently assume a more socially-acceptable macho presence.

Pisces psychology

They feel vulnerable because their personal boundaries are so poorly formed. They may react by artificially strengthening those boundaries with assumed identities, or they may retreat. Lack of ego identity can make them vague, and they are at their best when they acknowledge their compassionate, creative or spiritual capacities. This sign, however, yields many surprisingly strong individuals; perhaps they excel in the zodiac with the sheer unpredictability of their lives.

Pisces mythology is very ancient.

It relates back to watery fertility goddesses and saviour/redeemers, including the Christian influences.

In the temples of Phoenician fish-cult goddess Atargatis, there were pools with fish which were only eaten ritually.

In Babylonian myth, two fish found a great egg and propelled it to shore. The goddess Atargatis hatched from it, and elevated the fish to heaven to honour their helpfulness.

Atargatis had a son, Ichthys, who later became the Babylonian fish-god Ea. Subsequent mythical pairs correlated with Atargatis and Ichthys were Ishtar & Tammuz, Kybele & Attis, and Aphrodite & Adonis. Ea was linked with the fish-goat Capricornus.

In the Piscean pair - one fish represented the great mother and the other fish, her redeemer-son. The theme of mother and lover-son is Piscean. The son is often seasonal and sacrificial. The mother is described by Liz Greene as devouring, destructive and lascivious, connected with the primordial world of instinct. [ The Astrology of Fate (Weiser), p.259 ]

In the symbol of Pisces, mother and son are forever bound to each other by the tails – they are the great goddess of fertility/devouring mother and the redeemer/victim son. Greene says [ibid]

“Perhaps, we are here confronting an image of the transient yet sacred life of the individual soul, born out of the Mother and doomed to return to her, forever bound to her, yet for a brief season the fertiliser of the earth and the creative spark which renews life.”

Pisces is mythically tied to the irrational mother-world, to the unconscious – although they may be striving for conscious awareness.

The victim, the injured one, is also often the redeemer, because the injured are so full of compassion due to their experiences. Piscean suffering – like Cancerian insecurity or bondedness – often yields great creativity.

Rational types of Pisceans – those who cultivate conscious awareness – often become involved with chaotic types who keep them vicariously in touch with that subliminal realm.

Christians symbolise their redeemer as Ichthys. The dismembered Christ is ritually eaten and his blood ritually drunk in the communion service. It is the religion of the Age of Pisces, and it will be interesting to see how it modifies as the Age of Aquarius approaches.

A shadow of Pisces is this:

the Piscean has a vested interest in keeping the person they are rescuing or caring for in that sick or helpless state. Liz Taylor is a Pisces – and has a long list of husbands who presumably ‘needed' her care. To what extent did she devour them as well as care for them?
